Listen: Bam receives global award for humanitarian work

RESPECTED community leader Philip Bam, of Grassy Park, has received a global award for his humanitarian work with the League of Friends of the Blind (Lofob) and other organisations.

The Heart of the Earth Medal was presented by the Heart of the Earth Foundation in Poland for Bam’s unwavering commitment and selfless service, which has enriched the lives of countless individuals locally and internationally, said Lofob public relations officer Heidi Volkwijn.

Bam said: “I am very blessed that I could be of service to people.”

“I am very humbled by “being recognised among other worthy recipients, and to know that whatever work you do in your community, although you seek no reward or recognition, is recognised on a global level.”

He is one of seven global recipients in the first round of awards handed over in Poland in December. But he could not attend the ceremony, said Volkwijn.

She said: “True to his cause of serving his fellow man, he passed up the opportunity to be present at the award ceremony, as he was involved in the first Blind Cricket World Cup in South Africa at the time.”

She said Lofob was extremely proud of its former executive director and vice-president for this remarkable achievement.

Lofob paid tribute to him for his life-changing work at a special ceremony on Saturday at the Lofob Centre in Grassy Park.

Volkwijn said what set Bam apart was his simplicity, humility, absence of vanity and readiness to serve, the marks of all great achievers on behalf of humanity.

It’s people like Mr Bam, who do not decide to become extraordinary, but who decide to accomplish extraordinary things,” she added.

Organisations in which Bam has played a prominent role include The Princess Vlei Forum; World Blind Organisation; Lotus River Grassy Park Ratepayers and Residents Civic Association (Logra); Greater Cape Town Civic Alliance (GCTCA); and the Grassy Park Community Police Forum (CPF).

The world award consists of a medal, a gold plaque and a certificate.

The „Heart of the Earth” medal was founded by World Organization Koluchstyl. This Medal is given to people and institutions who work for development of human, earth and human integration. Those people and institutions bring help through education, humanitarian actions, medical help and strongly care about the ecologic state of our planet.
