Date: Mon, May 13, 2019 at 3:03 PM
Subject: SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS THROUGHOUT THE CITY

THE HON EXECUTIVE MAYOR
THE MAYCO MEMBER: SAFETY AND SECURITY
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: SAFETY AND SECURITY
CITY OF CAPE TOWN

Dear Sirs

The Greater Cape Town Civic Alliance at its executive committee meeting on Saturday 11 May 2019, was informed about concerns ratepayers have about surveillance cameras in the suburbs and throughout the City.  Whilst we understand and support the need for surveillance in crime prevention initiatives, we noted the concerns of our citizens regarding the protection of their privacy and possible abuse of the surveillance system.

In order to be properly informed and to respond to the concerns, we would appreciate it if you could advise us about your policy and ethics in respect of the surveillance cameras and usage thereof.   We will appreciate any policy documents regarding this matter, you might be able to share with us.

It is our understanding that Neighbourhood watch members monitor these cameras. We are not aware of the level of security training or vetting these members have to ensure that the information collected or to which they have access cannot be abused.  We will appreciate it if you could inform us about levels of training and security level vetting.

We look forward to your response.

Please note the members of our executive committee are copied on this mail.

Yours sincerely
Philip Bam
SECRETARY: GREATER CAPE TOWN CIVIC ALLIANCE
