The Climate Change Discussions are underway!

The WESSA facilitated series of four Discussions around Climate Change has ‘kicked off’ with the first discussion on Energy having taken place on Saturday 23rd July at a lively,  joint seminar with the Greater Cape Town Civic Alliance.

The second Discussion – on Water will take place on Tuesday 2 August from 4pm – 6pm, with Waste and Biodiversity being covered on 23 and 30 August respectively.

The UN Climate Change Convention, COP17, taking place in Durban in December is THE most crucial climate conference to date. 2012 marks the end of the Kyoto Accord and recommitment is not guaranteed. Drastic climate change indicators from massive wildfires to devastating floods abound globally. These go way beyond weather variability. In anticipation of COP17, and considering that the previous two meetings in Copenhagen and Mexico produced very little, WESSA has undertaken to run this series of discussions, to give civil society an opportunity to participate in constructive discussions around climate change and:

  •  identify what mitigation and adaptation measures are being implemented by municipalities, business, NGOs and civil society;
  • explore innovative, practical responses to climate change;
  • and develop important civil society messages that South Africa should be taking to COP17.

Outcomes of the discussions taking place around the country will be consolidated by WESSA nationally in September and taken to the international event in December. However the discussions are, more importantly, about the citizens and relevant agencies in the country building up strong alliances and practical commitments to finding solutions which we know are increasingly urgent.

Everyone is welcome to participate and attendance is free.
